How to write AI prompts that get great results (the 5-part formula)

A simple 5-part prompt formula (role, task, context, format, constraints) with before/after examples for ChatGPT, Claude, Grok and Gemini.

Most disappointing AI answers come from vague prompts. Give the model the same briefing you'd give a smart new coworker and quality jumps immediately.

Step 1

The formula: Role, Task, Context, Format, Constraints

  1. Role: who should the AI act as? ("an experienced HR manager")
  2. Task: one clear verb. Write, summarize, compare, rewrite, plan.
  3. Context: audience, goal, background facts the AI can't know.
  4. Format: bullets, table, email, word count.
  5. Constraints: tone, things to avoid, reading level.
Step 2

Before and after

Weak: Write a job post for a receptionist.

Strong:

You are an experienced small-business hiring manager.
Write a job post for a part-time receptionist at a 6-person dental office in Columbus, Ohio.
Context: 25 hrs/week, $18-21/hr, must be friendly on the phone and comfortable with scheduling software. We value reliability over experience.
Format: headline, 3-sentence intro, bullet lists for responsibilities and requirements, how to apply.
Constraints: under 250 words, warm but professional, no clichés like "rockstar" or "fast-paced environment".
Step 3

Three habits that multiply results

  • Iterate, don't restart. Reply with "Shorter, and make the second bullet more specific." The model keeps context.
  • Ask it to ask you. End with Before you start, ask me up to 3 questions that would improve the result.
  • Give an example. Paste a sample you like and say "match this style".
Step 4

Reusable template

You are [role].
Task: [verb + deliverable].
Context: [audience, goal, key facts].
Format: [structure, length].
Constraints: [tone, avoid, must include].
Ask me up to 3 clarifying questions first if anything is unclear.
Check before you send: AI can invent facts, names and numbers. Read the output once, fix anything wrong, and never paste passwords, client secrets or private health/financial data into a chatbot.

Quick tips on this topic

⚡ Make AI ask you questions first

Vague request? End your prompt by asking the AI to interview you. The answers make the output 2x better.

⚡ Give it a role

Start with who the AI should be. A role sets vocabulary, depth and tone in one line.

⚡ Say the format out loud

Bullets, table, 3 sentences, 100 words. If you don't say it, you get an essay.
