AI is useful for both: it can read the job description like a hiring manager and then play the interviewer. What it can't do is know your real experience, so every story in this guide comes from you.
Short version: paste the job description, get the likely questions, build 5 or 6 true stories, run a mock interview, then research the company yourself.
Predict the questions from the job description
Here is a job description: [paste].
Act as the hiring manager. List the 12 questions I'm most likely to be asked: 4 about skills in this posting, 4 behavioral, 2 about motivation and 2 tough ones (gaps, weaknesses, salary).
For each, say in one line what the interviewer is really trying to find out.The "what they're really asking" line is the useful part. "Tell me about a conflict" is usually about whether you stay professional and fix things, not about the conflict.
Turn your experience into STAR stories
STAR means Situation, Task, Action, Result. Most behavioral questions can be answered with a handful of good stories, so build those first.
Interview me one question at a time to collect 5 work stories I can reuse in interviews: a hard problem I solved, a conflict, a failure, a time I led something, and a time I learned fast.
Then write each one in STAR format, under 150 words, using only what I told you. Don't add numbers or results I didn't give you.
Finally, map each story to the questions it can answer from this list: [paste the 12 questions].Run a mock interview
Run a mock interview for [job title] at a [type of company]. Ask one question at a time and wait for my answer.
After each answer, give me: what worked, what was vague, and a one-sentence fix. Be direct, not encouraging.
After 6 questions, give me my 2 biggest patterns to work on.Many chat apps have a voice mode. Practicing out loud is closer to the real thing than typing, and you'll hear where you ramble.
Prepare the hard ones
Help me answer these honestly and briefly: [why I left my last job / a gap in my resume / my biggest weakness].
My real situation: [explain]. Give me a 3-4 sentence answer that's truthful, doesn't overshare and ends on what I'm looking for now.For salary questions, look up ranges yourself on job postings and pay-data sites rather than trusting a number from a chatbot.
Write questions to ask them
Based on this job description [paste] and what I know about the company [paste notes from their site or recent news I've read], write 8 questions I could ask the interviewer.
Avoid anything answered on their website. Include 2 about how success is measured in the first 90 days.Research the company on its own website and recent news; AI can be out of date about companies. Then send a short thank-you note after the interview. Our email guide has prompts for that, and our resume and cover letter guide covers the application itself. Got the offer? Can ChatGPT do a mock interview?
Yes. Ask it to act as the interviewer, ask one question at a time and give feedback after each answer. Voice mode makes the practice closer to a real interview.
What is the STAR method?
A way to structure answers to behavioral questions: the Situation, your Task, the Action you took, and the Result.
Is it okay to use AI to prepare for an interview?
Using AI to practice and organize your own stories is fine. Don't memorize details you didn't actually do, and don't use AI during a live interview unless the employer allows it.
How do I predict interview questions?
Paste the job description and ask the AI which skills and behaviors it emphasizes and what questions test them. Then add common questions like 'tell me about yourself' and 'why this role'.
