Holiday trips go wrong in predictable ways: a forgotten ID, a jar of homemade jam taken at security, wrapped presents unwrapped at the checkpoint, a cancelled flight and no plan. AI is a good checklist builder for all of it. It can't see live fares or delays, so you'll still check the airline's site, but it will make sure you've thought of everything before you leave.

Short version: brief the AI once, get a countdown timeline, check your ID, build a packing list that follows TSA rules, write a cancelled-flight plan and send your host a one-message summary.

Step 1

Brief the AI and get a countdown timeline

I'm traveling for [Thanksgiving / the December holidays].
Travelers: [who, including kids or pets]. From [city] to [city]. Leaving [date], returning [date]. Getting there by [flight / car / train].
Things to arrange: [pet sitter, mail, plant watering, time off, gifts to bring].
Make a countdown checklist from today to the day I get home, grouped by: 3+ weeks out, 1-2 weeks, 3 days, the night before, travel day, and the day after I get back.
Mark the must-not-slip items. Ask me up to 3 questions first if anything important is missing.

If you're still choosing what to do at the destination, our AI trip itinerary guide builds a day-by-day plan with travel times and a rainy-day backup.

Step 2

Check your ID now, not at the airport

For US domestic flights, REAL ID enforcement began May 7, 2025: you need a REAL ID-compliant license (usually marked with a star) or another acceptable ID such as a passport. TSA's site says travelers without an acceptable ID must pay a $45 fee to verify their identity another way (TSA ConfirmID). Check every traveler's ID and expiry date three weeks out, while there's still time to fix it.

Step 3

Build a packing list that follows TSA rules

The rules AI tends to get fuzzy on, straight from TSA:

  • Liquids in carry-ons: containers of 3.4 ounces (100 ml) or less, all in one quart-size bag. Larger containers go in checked bags (TSA liquids rule).
  • Holiday food counts: sauces, jam, preserves and wine are liquids or gels, so anything over 3.4 ounces goes in checked luggage.
  • Medications and baby food or formula are exempt from the 3.4-ounce limit, though they may get extra screening.
  • Gifts: TSA recommends gift bags or boxes with lids instead of wrapped presents, because a wrapped gift that alarms may have to be opened. Snow globes go in checked bags.

Make a packing list for [N] people, [N] nights, in [destination] in [month], for a trip that includes [dinner out, church, kids' activities, snow].
Split it into: carry-on, checked bag (or car), and wear on travel day.
Follow these rules: carry-on liquids 3.4 oz / 100 ml or less in one quart bag; foods like sauces, jam and wine over 3.4 oz go in checked bags; gifts in gift bags or lidded boxes, not wrapped; snow globes in checked bags.
I'm bringing these gifts and food: [list]. Tell me where each one should go.
Unsure about one item? TSA's "What can I bring?" tool on tsa.gov answers item-by-item. Trust that over a chatbot.
Step 4

Driving instead? Plan the stops

I'm driving [distance or hours] from [city] to [city] on [date] with [who].
Plan the drive with a stop about every [2] hours: what to look for at each stop (gas, food, restrooms, a place for kids or a dog to move).
Add a leave-by time to arrive by [time], a checklist for the car the night before (tires, wipers, washer fluid, phone charger, snacks, blanket), and a short list of things to check on the morning of the drive (weather, road conditions).

Check the forecast and your state's road conditions site yourself on the morning you leave; the AI's information isn't live.

Step 5

Write your cancelled-flight plan before you need it

Know your rights before you're standing in a rebooking line. Under the US DOT's automatic refund rule (last checked Oct 26, 2026), if an airline cancels or significantly changes your flight to, from or within the US and you don't accept the new flight, rebooking or a voucher, you're owed a refund to your original payment method: within 7 business days for credit cards and 20 calendar days for other payment types. A significant change includes a domestic flight leaving 3+ hours earlier or arriving 3+ hours later (6+ hours for international), a different airport, or extra connections. If you accept a rebooked flight, the refund right goes away, so decide calmly.

Help me write a one-page "if my flight is cancelled or badly delayed" plan for [flight details] on [date].
Include: my must-arrive-by time, 2 backup options (later flight, nearby airport, train or driving), who to tell, what to do with the hotel or car rental, and the questions to ask the airline agent.
Then draft a short, polite message to the airline asking for a refund to my original payment method because my flight was [cancelled / changed by X hours] and I did not accept the rebooking or voucher. Leave [brackets] for confirmation numbers.

If the airline doesn't respond, our complaint letter guide has an escalation template.

Step 6

Send your host a one-message summary

Write a short, friendly text to [host] with our arrival time, how we're getting from the airport or station, what we're bringing, any food allergies or restrictions in our group, and when we're leaving.
Under 80 words.

Bringing a dish to a potluck? Our Friendsgiving potluck guide has a sign-up sheet and travel-friendly dish ideas, and the AI gift list guide helps with the presents in your bag.

Check before you send: AI can invent facts, names and numbers. Read the output once, fix anything wrong, and never paste passwords, client secrets or private health/financial data into a chatbot.

Frequently asked questions

Can AI plan my holiday travel?

It can build the checklist, timeline, packing list and backup plan. It can't see live fares, delays or weather, so check those on the airline, rail or weather sites yourself.

Can I bring homemade food or wine in my carry-on?

Solid foods are generally fine, but TSA treats sauces, jam, preserves and wine as liquids or gels, so anything over 3.4 ounces (100 ml) must go in a checked bag.

Should I wrap gifts before flying?

TSA recommends gift bags or boxes with removable lids instead of wrapped gifts, because a wrapped gift that alarms may have to be unwrapped for inspection.

What happens if my flight is cancelled?

Under the US DOT's automatic refund rule, if your flight is cancelled or significantly changed and you don't accept rebooking or a voucher, the airline owes you a refund to your original payment method.

Quick tips on this topic

⚡ Travel countdown in one prompt

Give AI your dates, travelers and to-dos and get a checklist from 3 weeks out to the day after you're home.

⚡ Jam counts as a liquid

Tell AI the TSA rules when you ask for a packing list: 3.4 oz liquids in one quart bag, sauces, jam and wine over that in checked bags.

⚡ Pack gifts unwrapped

TSA recommends gift bags or lidded boxes; a wrapped present that alarms may be opened. Ask AI for a wrap-at-destination checklist.
