How to use ElevenLabs to make a natural AI voiceover
A beginner's step-by-step guide to ElevenLabs text-to-speech: choosing a voice, writing a script that sounds human, fixing pronunciation, and using voices ethically.
Write a script for the ear
Text that reads well often sounds stiff aloud. Have an assistant convert it:
Rewrite this as a spoken voiceover script. Short sentences, contractions, natural pauses (use commas and full stops), no lists or parentheses. Keep it under [N] words.
[paste text]Choose a voice
In ElevenLabs, open text-to-speech and browse the voice library. Filter by language, accent, age and use case (narration, conversational, characters). Test each with the same paragraph.
Generate and tune
- Generate in short sections (a paragraph or two) so you can redo just one part.
- Use the voice settings to trade expressiveness for consistency: more stability sounds steadier, less sounds more emotional.
- Punctuation steers delivery: commas for short pauses, full stops for longer ones.
Fix pronunciation
Spell tricky names phonetically in the script (e.g. "Nguyen" → "Win") or use the tool's pronunciation features where available.
Export and use
Download the audio and drop it into your video editor, e.g. Descript or Canva. Check your plan's terms before using voices commercially.
Ethics and safety
Only clone a voice that is yours or that you have explicit permission to use. Don't impersonate real people. Disclose AI voices where listeners would expect to know.
