How to do Thanksgiving on a budget with AI

Use ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or Grok to plan Thanksgiving on a budget: a per-guest spending cap, a menu that stretches, a shopping list priced from your own store's flyer, and a no-waste leftovers plan.

The cheapest Thanksgiving is the one you planned before you went shopping. AI can turn a total budget into a per-guest number, build a menu around it, and turn your store's actual prices into a shopping list with a running total. It can't know today's prices at your store, so the numbers have to come from you.

Short version: set a total and divide by guests, pick a menu that leans on cheap staples, price the list from your store's flyer or app, buy the right amount of turkey (USDA suggests about 1 lb per person), and plan the leftovers before the day.

Step 1

Turn your total into a per-guest budget

I want to host Thanksgiving for [10] people for $[150] total, including drinks and supplies.
Work out the per-guest figure, then split the total into: turkey/main, sides, bread, dessert, drinks, supplies and a 10% buffer.
Show the math. Then ask me which 2 things matter most to my family so you can shift money toward them.

The buffer is what keeps a forgotten stick of butter from blowing the budget. If you track money monthly, our monthly budget guide shows where a holiday fits.

Step 2

Build a menu that stretches

Suggest a Thanksgiving menu for [10] that fits $[150] total.
Lean on low-cost staples (potatoes, carrots, onions, squash, bread, rice, beans, pasta) and dishes that are cheaper made from scratch.
For each dish: rough serving count, the 2-3 key ingredients I need to price, and whether it can be made ahead.
Don't give me prices; I'll add them from my store.

Asking AI not to guess prices matters: its numbers are often out of date or invented. You'll add real ones in the next step.

Step 3

Buy the right amount of turkey

Over-buying the bird is the most expensive mistake. Per USDA's "Let's Talk Turkey" guide, allow about 1 pound of turkey per person (1¼ pounds for frozen pre-stuffed turkeys). A frozen turkey thaws in the fridge at about 24 hours per 4 to 5 pounds, so a sale bird bought early needs fridge days too.

I'm serving [10] people. Using USDA's guide of about 1 lb of turkey per person, what size should I buy?
Compare that with a bone-in turkey breast for a group of [6], and tell me what I'd lose (leftovers, stock) with the smaller option.
Show the math.

Step 4

Price the shopping list from your own store

Here's my menu: [paste]. Make a shopping list grouped by store section with quantities.
Then I'll paste prices from my store's flyer/app: [paste item - price].
Fill in a price column, total each section, and show the running total against my $[150] budget.
Mark the 3 swaps that would save the most (store brand, frozen vs fresh, smaller pack), and list pantry items I should check before buying.

Copy prices from the weekly ad or the store app, and check the AI's arithmetic with a calculator. Our meal planning and grocery list guide uses the same price-from-your-store method for everyday weeks.

Step 5

Share the cost without awkwardness

Write a short, warm message to my family group chat asking people to bring one dish or chip in $[10], with 3 suggested dishes they could bring.
No guilt, no pressure, under 70 words.

Turning it into a potluck is the biggest single saving. Our Friendsgiving potluck guide has the sign-up sheet prompt.

Step 6

Plan leftovers so nothing gets thrown away

After Thanksgiving I'll likely have: [turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, cranberry sauce, rolls].
Plan 3 leftover dinners for [4] people that use them up, plus which items to freeze on day one.
List anything extra I'd need to buy (keep it under $[15]).

Per USDA, refrigerated turkey, stuffing and gravy should be used within 3 to 4 days, so freeze what you won't eat by then. See our Thanksgiving leftovers meal plan and how to plan Thanksgiving dinner with AI for the rest of the day.

Check before you send: AI can invent facts, names and numbers. Read the output once, fix anything wrong, and never paste passwords, client secrets or private health/financial data into a chatbot.
